Nominative determinism 13

Here's another example of nominative determinism - people whose jobs suit their names.

In a study of long-tailed tits' co-operative breeding, entitled "Ecological and demographic correlates of helping behaviour in a cooperatively breeding bird", the lead author is…..

Prof Ben Hatchwell!

Shampoo on Amazon - for millionaires only!

I always knew personal care products were pricey, but this shampoo sold via Amazon takes the biscuit! Or rather the soapsuds?
Some pricing algorithm….

Funny TV programme info warning

Not content to over-block or over-filter perfectly innocuous websites, it seems that the UK nanny state's ineffective over-cautiousness is spreading… to TV programmes.

Note the warning in the programme info (shown on my, generally pretty good, Humax Fox T2) for a TV show depicting an elderly couple pottering gently along the canals of Wales:

canalJourneysInfo

Needless to say, the programme contained no "very strong language", nudity, violence or indeed sexual scenes!

Although occasionally they did grumble about the weather, and there was the odd swear word when their boat bumped against a canal wall…

Funny sign - Arts & Graft!

Seen in Soho, London recently (and I'm sure it was a lot of work to make those products too!):

Nominative determinism 12

I've not done a nominative determinism post in ages, but here's another good one.

The author of a draft report on the proposal for a new EU directive on recreational crafts and personal watercrafts is called

Malcolm Harbour

Funny subtitles

It must be tough for those people who have to subtitle TV programmes, especially at speed.

Here's a great example of a clear slip of the subtitling finger, which made me laugh. Or rather, titter.

Google Reader captchas I have known...

would almost certainly be followed by

Where on earth does Google get these from? No, I don't think I want to know...

Apologies to the House… (funnies)

(Humour interlude)

If you've not read the "Apologies to the House of Commons since 1979" (latest version), there's some light relief there.

Amongst the serious stuff like apologising for claiming for expenses they shouldn't have (why only a few apologies there??), and failing to declare interests they should have, there are funny things like:

  • apologising for not saying sorry (01/02/2006 Stephen Byers)
  • using "unParliamentary" or "improper" words to describe others (07/03/2002 George Galloway, 28/06/2000 Peter Lilley, 16/03/2000 James Gray & lots more!)

My favourites:

  • 01/03/1982 Nicholas Edwards Suggested during a debate that another Member had been drinking
  • 07/02/1984 Peter Snape Remarks made about British Rail Southern Region commuters
  • 07/05/1985 Dafydd Wigley Damaging the Speaker's Chair during exchanges at the end of a debate
  • 19/04/1988 Ron Brown Throwing the ceremonial mace to the floor.

Heated debates, much? Did you know that in the House the line which members aren't allowed to physically cross was drawn so that the other side would be at least a sword's length away from it? (see Wikipedia on "toe the line").

Interestingly, there haven't been many MP apologies lately. Presumably because they think they have no reason to.

eBay eeeewwww!

Found on Google Product Search UK (formerly Froogle.co.uk):

Used dental floss, eeeewww!

This is actually the best dental floss I've ever used by the way, but it's hard to get it except expensively at expensive dentists, so I buy online. Still not cheap, but to me it's worth it.

Hardware hacking: VCR cat feeder, boot fetish Pong console

What fun.

See the BBC video (story here) of Dorkbot enthusiast James Larsson where he shows off his VCR cat feeder (dispenses food at the time the VCR’s been set to).

The cat's shown at the start and, err, the demo is at 03.08 if anyone wants to know, of a kinky boot fetish Pong game where the onscreen players are made to go up and down by groping and fondling leather boots (seriously) – and if you miss a point you get punished by a motorised whip (severity level adjustable)!

James Larsson and his inventions have also been featured in the New York Times and Wired.

Google in straitened times..

I guess in these tough economic times, Google will take ad money from just 'bout anyone!

(For those who don't know, Bing is Microsoft's new search engine, the first that's likely to prove to be any serious threat to Google.)

Curved cucumbers and knobbly carrots are back!

Bendy cucumber fans, rejoice! From tomorrow, EU rules on the size and shape (!) of 26 fruits & vegetables will be updated.

Apricots, artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, avocadoes, beans, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, courgettes, cucumbers, cultivated mushrooms, garlic, hazelnuts in shell, headed cabbage, leeks, melons, onions, peas, plums, ribbed celery, spinach, walnuts in shell, water melons, and witloof/chicory - they can all be of any size and shape, from tomorrow.

Bet that made your day. As it did mine.

However, apples, citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, lettuces, peaches and nectarines, pears, strawberries, sweet peppers, table grapes and tomatoes will still have to conform to standards (unless individual countries allow weirdly shaped ones to be sold with a clear "product intended for processing" label).

In case you wonder, the "curved cucumbers and knobbly carrots" quote is from Mariann Fischer Boel, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. Really.

Who says the drive to cut EU red tape isn't going anywhere, huh?

Today, fruit & veg; tomorrow - Eurovision?

Waterskiing granny - video

I wanna be like that when I'm 77! Heck I wanna be like that now!

What's better still is the name of this "look, no hands!" waterskiing Kansas granny: Avola Fitzwater.

Talking about names, you've probably heard about furniture seller Habitat getting into deep doodoo amongst Net denizens for their insensitive abuse of Twitter hashtags. A big cockup there.

The name of their CIO, who says they still plan to keep marketing via social media?

Dekock.

(If you like funny or apt names, see my posts on nominative determinism and silly names.)

Blogger: eeyore is cute!

As Kirk points out (and Blogger acknowledged), some users of Google's Blogger who publish via FTP have been seeing a new post that says "eeyore is cute!" (awww, yeah, see the pic above) - and some non-FTP users who chose to get post confirmation emails may also have got an email about a test "eeyore is cute!" post.

His guess as to what happened was correct: "An internal load testing at Blogger somehow got some wires crossed that let their test post get published on some blogs."

Here's a screenshots of one of the affected blogs:

So not to worry, if you got that post or email your blog hasn't been hacked, it was just an internal mixup at Google, all you have to do is republish your blog and that'll fix it. Clearly there are Pooh fans at Google!

Would be even funnier if this started happening on 1 April!

Note: low resolution Eeyore pic downloaded from Wikipedia, made even smaller and displayed on the same basis i.e. believed to be fair use; but if the owner disagrees please let me know.
